I saw this picture making the rounds on Facebook a few days ago and just had to laugh. Today is the first day of March 2021, and I still feel like it’s March of 2020 in so many ways.

2020 was a crazy year for sure … fires in Australia, COVID-19 shuts down the globe, the stock market takes us for a ride, murder hornets make their way to the US, everyone becomes obsessed with Tiger King, Megxit rocks the British Empire, riots, the US Elections … do I need to go on. Now, here we are in 2021, and has anything changed? We are still on global lockdown, US surpasses 500,00 lives lost to COVID-19, the US Capitol Building invasion, and winter storm Uri rocks the entire US and cripples Texas’s electrical grid where millions are left without power and water in record-breaking temperatures. And that is only two months.

It may seem like I am pretty negative, but that is not my intention at all. Don’t get me wrong, a lot is going on and many obstacles that need to be overcome, but as long as we work the problems, they will be overcome. Have you ever seen the movie, The Martian starring Matt Damon? At the end of the film, he talks to a class about his experience of being left on Mars. How he thought he would die, and he could either accept that as his fate or get to work. He could get to work solving one problem and then the next problem, and that if he solved enough problems, he would make it home. He did not let an impossible situation keep him from trying.

When we look at what is going on around us, many may feel that we are in a similarly impossible situation. However, if we stop, take a deep breath, and start working the issues, we can make it happen. I have had this very same conversation with many clients that felt overwhelmed about their debt situation.

If you find yourself with these same feelings, take a deep breath. Then sit down and write down everything seeming impossible or overwhelming (essential a brain dump). Once you have everything down in black and white, start prioritizing the issues. You may find that some can be whipped out easily and knocked off the list quickly. Others will take some time and probably even some conversations with others to make a plan. Just take it one step at a time.
